Rethinking Surfaces: Screens & Pixels as the Next Design Material
Screens have traditionally been treated as separate objects in interior design, often disrupting the flow of a space. Ventana challenges this idea, positioning screens as an integrated design material, similar to wood, metal, or stone. In collaboration with Politecnico di Milano, this project invites students of architecture, design, and engineering to explore how digital surfaces can enhance modern interiors, creating immersive and functional spaces that merge technology with design.

Technology at the Core
At the heart of this initiative is VENTANA (https://ventanadesign.com/), a high-end microLED tile with unmatched picture quality and a flexible form factor. Ventana is ultra-thin, modular, and adaptable, allowing it to fit any shape or size. Its seamless integration into interiors makes it a natural design element rather than a separate display.

Expanding Digital Surfaces in Design
While Ventana is primarily envisioned as a seamless architectural surface, it also presents an opportunity to rethink how technology integrates into everyday objects and spaces. As living and working environments evolve, there is a growing need for furniture and products that incorporate digital surfaces. As a secondary approach, this project encourages students to explore not only how Ventana enhances walls and interiors but also how it could be applied to furniture and product design, responding to shifting consumer behaviors.

Project Objectives

  • Integrate digital surfaces as a key element of spatial design rather than an add-on.
  • Explore how Ventana can be used in homes, offices, retail, and cultural spaces without modifying its core technology.
  • Expand the role of Ventana in shaping dynamic environments through content and interaction.
  • While the focus is on Ventana as a design material, students may also suggest ideas for on-screen content as an additional creative layer.
  • Consider how Ventana could be applied beyond surfaces, extending into furniture and product design to align with future living and working spaces.

Project Structure
  • Introduction to VENTANA – Led by its founders, students will explore its technical capabilities, superior display quality, and design flexibility.
  • Concept Development – Multidisciplinary teams will brainstorm and develop applications for Ventana in different environments.
  • Design Integration and Feasibility – Exploring how Ventana can merge with materials, furniture, and architectural elements to create seamless, technology-enhanced spaces.
  • Design Visualization – Renderings, prototypes, and use-case scenarios will showcase how Ventana integrates into real-world spaces and products.
  • Final Showcase and Industry Review – Students will present their concepts to an audience of industry professionals, with potential opportunities for further development.

A Future-Driven Collaboration
This project gives students the opportunity to explore the intersection of technology, design, and architecture, shaping the future of digital spaces. With Ventana's unmatched picture quality and flexible form, the focus shifts from where screens are placed to how they transform environments. By expanding this vision to furniture and product design, students can push boundaries and explore how digital surfaces become a natural part of daily life.
