Descrizione dell'iniziativa
Did you know that just a few steps away from the Bovisa Campus lies La Goccia — a small urban forest that has grown spontaneously over the past thirty years on the site of a former gas production plant? Today, this area is at the heart of GOCCIA – Green Opportunities to Clean-up Contaminants through an Interspecies Alliance (https://eui-goccia.eu/it), an ambitious research and urban regeneration project funded by the European Urban Initiative of the European Commission. Its goal is clear: to reclaim the site and increase urban greenery through Nature-Based Solutions, co-designing a multispecies regenerative model that enhances biodiversity and fosters social innovation. GOCCIA marks a paradigm shift: non-human entities are no longer background elements but active agents of transformation. The area thus becomes more than a remediation site: it becomes an urban living lab, an Interspecies Playground where communities, researchers, and non-human entities collaborate to generate shared value. To activate this playground, La Goccia will soon host citizen science activities involving local residents, associations, and students from the Politecnico di Milano. Supporting these actions will be the design of a mobile unit—not just a simple transport cart, but a small nomadic infrastructure that can move through the forest, carry monitoring tools, and transform when needed into a communication and dissemination device for the project across the neighbourhood and the city. The Design Challenge invites participants to imagine this mobile unit in all its aspects—structural, technical, and communicative. At the end of the workshop, the winning project will be prototyped, with the aim of making the unit fully operational by next spring to support the ongoing activities of the GOCCIA project.
